This is from a story about gadgets that make you look like a jerk.  I really laughed my ass off when I came to this entry below: (from http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28039226/?pg=7#Tech_JerkGadgets)

[Also, yes - I'm aware MSNBC is MS, but this is still funny to me (and many others I'm sure)]

Number 6 - LINUX

Linux is great. It's a free, open-source operating system (OS) based on work done by Linus Torvalds in the early '90s. Again, it's free, powerful and easy to ...

Oh wait, it's a pain to use. Let's get this straight: Linux is very good, and leads the charge in an ongoing revolution in free software. However, a lot of Linux users out there give the whole thing a poor name. They forget that most people don't know as much as they do about computers. Some people garden, write poetry, fall in love or ... er, bloviate about gadgetry.

Please don't confuse your fanaticism with superiority and, for the love of Jobs, stop telling us we're sheep under the sway of Microsoft. No one likes Comcast either, but until it's convenient to string our own fiber optic cable we're sticking with it. (Msnbc.com is a Microsoft-NBC Universal joint venture.)

Cool if: You're not heaping disdain on the rest of us, or maybe if you're in charge of a server farm.

Not cool if: You feel your mastery of computers excuses your inability to control a neck-beard.

They also have Anti-Virus to install, configure, update, and run. Botnets to contribute to. Malware to distribute. Registry cleaners to investigate and use. Recovery disks to make. And lets not forget the 2 mins it takes to move a file from one folder to another (even though the file is not actually moving).

They forget that most people don't know as much as they do about computers.

Uh.....no shit. If they did, they wouldn't be asking me fix their's.

Why do you always try to put words in other people's mouths? I never said they didn't release patches, but in the 2 years I have been using linux, I have never spent more than 5 mins updating my system. Can you say that about windows? NO

I didn't "put words in your mouth."

I was pointing out that you were writing as though linux vendors don't put out updates.

As a longtime linux user myself, I can testify to spending much more than 5min sifting through the list of updates and choosing only those I really need (on software I use, not packages for software I don't use).

My other point has, and always will be, that both operating systems have their place and uses.

And lauging 'cause I agree that telling MS users they are sheep is silly (and that sounded familiar to me).

Please quote where I said "Linux vendors do not put out updates". You can't because I never said that. I only made reference to the time spent on windows updates, which in no way insinuates that linux does not put out updates.

WTF? You should always keep the ALL the software on your computer updated, even if you don't use it. I don't know why you would pick and choose, but I just open the updater and click update. Everything. 5 mins.

I will state again:
I have never spent more than 5 mins updating my linux system. I have waited on many occasions for 5 mins just for the M$ updates to START downloading on the same hardware.

touchy touchy...   Roll Eyes

you wrote:

In my opinion you did insinuate it -

So then, please quote where I accused you of stating exactly "linux vendors don't put out updates." You won't find it 'cause I didn't write it.  I carefully chose the words "Oh - As if... "   Grin

And now you write more... that you install all patches.  So you're telling us then that you run services that don't need to be run???  If you're not running the service, why would you waste the time, hard drive space, and risk bad install/config... etc. etc.

For example - SAMBA.  I don't get SAMBA updates on linux servers not running SAMBA - why would I???

I don't have to tell you about bad installs currupting config files (and then the services you really need can't run).

hmmmmmmmmm

P.S. I get my updates from windows automatically at night.  So my time updating my windows machine is 0 minutes.  And that's 5 min less than you...lol...  Cool

So, you get ALL the updates for the system that you use, but you question why I do the same thing? Enjoying the hypocrisy.

PS - oh, you forgot the reboot. There goes your 5 mins.

Oh please, twist it how you like to suite you so you feel better... (can't answer eh?)

I can answer.  Yes, I get all my updates for windows just as I wrote - and I'm careful with linux to only get the updates for the software and services I'm using.  I understand if you're still scratching the surface of linux and may not have yet considered all the different configurations linux affords, and that other users take advantage of.

And you're welcome for the education.

Smug aren't I (it's like a smug war ...lol)?

Please enlighten us. How many different linux distributions have you actually used on a daily basis?

You want to know what's funny? I do exactly the opposite of that. I get all updates for linux, and am careful with windows. LOL
