I think I'm right in saying that obi-wan & yoda disappeared when they died. They had learned to maintain a presence through the force even though their physical form was gone.

Qui-gon did not disappear when he perished, yet managed to commune with Yoda after he had died. Did he have the full power to appear in ghost-like form like obi-wan & yoda in ROTJ? If so, then why did qui-gon not disappear on death? Or was he only able to commune with Yoda, who managed to discover the power to go further?

Also, when qui-gon was kneeling, meditating before darth maul killed him, was this him preparing to be able to maintain a presence in the force, in case he died?

I think it is kool that all through the prequel trilogies, all Anakin wanted was to cheat death. Either for someone he knew or for himself. After all the lies and deception the Emperor gave Anakin, it was the good guys that helped him achieve that goal in the end.

Qui Gon could appear just like Obi, Yoda, and eventually Ananikin. At the end of ROTS Yoda says that Qui Gon learned a way to commune and Yoda said he would teach Obi how to do it. I take it that that means it was the conjuring of their sprits to the mortal world....

I dunno I'm just going off of what Yoda said. It totally sounded like he was talking about the Etheral trick when he was tellling Obi Wan...

He is for sure talking about that. But he just says Qui Gon learned how to keep his identity when he became one with the force. Maybe he only knew how to talk to people and not show himself. The only time that we hear him is when Anakin kills all the sandpeople on Tatooine and he says "Anakin, nooooooo".

Thats what I think anyway
